Abstract: | The art of painting in Ethiopia has a tradition that goes back 1500 years. It has always been Christian and, in particular, ecclesiastical, in character. The Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnology, which is usually referred to in St. Petersburg by its original name, Kunstkamera, has an interesting and rather rich collection of Ethiopian paintings dating from the turn of the 20th century. This article comments on the process of change and development which had been occurring in Ethiopia's traditional art of painting on the eve of the 20th century and describes some of the paintings' major themes, as well as trends and styles in the manner of painting.
