Abstract: | Although there is no Act specific to special education, integration of handicapped children is the accepted policy in Zimbabwe. The present study investigates the attitudes of mainstream children towards their disabled counterparts on the basis of a questionnaire study of five hundred pupils (250 males and 250 females) aged about 16 years and attending third form classes in regular urban and rural secondary schools throughout Zimbabwe. Percentages were used in analysing the data. Results showed more positive attitudes towards integration with the disabled than negative ones. Most of the respondents tended to have positive attitudes towards the integration of their handicapped peers into regular classrooms provided they could cope with the regular work given. There was no significant difference between the attitudes of male and female students. Students appeared to be more tolerant towards some disabilities, such as hearing impairment and physical handicaps, than others, such as blindness and mental handicap. Bibliogr., sum. |
