Abstract: | This article describes various types of Tarok children's songs, drawing heavily on the author's own recollections of his childhood in Plateau State of central Nigeria. The author distinguishes the following classes of songs: game songs or singing games, lullabies, and shepherd's songs. The game songs are further divided into songs performed by both girls and boys, songs performed by girls only or boys only, and impromptu game songs occasioned by specific circumstances. The majority of boys and girls play a singing game which is a combination of a train dance, a pulling game, a leg folding game, a beer brewing game, a discipline game, a 'know your uncles' game and a 'scooping out food' game. The purpose of the musical games is both entertainment and education. The texts of a few songs are included in transcribed form together with an English translation. Bibliogr. |
