Abstract: | The aim of this paper is to demonstrate why gender is a key development issue for the SADC countries, and why adopting a gender approach is critical for the overall progress of the subregion. A gender approach involves a complex and comprehensive analysis of the relationships between men and women, recognizing the differences in their needs, interests, priorities, roles and responsibilities. A gender approach to development takes these issues into account in development policymaking, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation. A gender analysis of economic development results in a more cost-effective use of human and financial resources and is likely to lead to increased productivity and sustainable development. Moreover, gender equality is an issue of basic human rights, as affirmed in a number of international and (sub)regional instruments to which SADC countries are signatories. Bibliogr., sum. |
