Abstract:A number of studies have shown that preinstructional activities have both facilitative and nonfacilitative effects in enhancing learner recall and conceptual understanding of printed materials. The present study examines three such preinstructional activities: advance organizers, performance objectives and structured overviews. Two achievement tests were administered to 674 preservice teachers enrolled in Gweru and Hillside Teachers Colleges in Zimbabwe. The results indicated that performance objectives have the most beneficial effect. The data appear to support the use of preinstructional activities in the design and development of lessons. The findings also suggest that stated preinstructional activities may have a global pedagogical value. Bibliogr., sum.
