Abstract: | This paper on the role of Bamanan (Bambara) women in the rural production system in the Manghadié delta area of Mali presents the methodology and the main conclusions of the author's 1991 PhD thesis, for which field research was carried out in the period 1988-1990. The methodology used aims to identify areas of women's autonomy in production activities, such as gardening, and factors determining their degree of control. For women, control over work depends both upon their involvement in the decisionmaking process and on their ability to negotiate access to the various components of their activities. The study focuses on gender-related and other social factors such as interethnic relations and relationships between women - family and friendship networks - which determine women's autonomy in production activities. The author also identifies a number of relevant economic and environmental factors. Bibliogr., notes, sum. in English, French (p. 266), Portuguese (p. 267-268) and Spanish (p. 269). |
