Abstract:Most of the data used for this survey are taken from the 1983 census of the Sudan. The author uses the figures to try to determine the interrelationship between urbanization and socioeconomic development. The variables he chooses to measure socioeconomic progress are secondary school enrollment ratio; medical and dental care per 100,000 head of population; adult literacy rate; life expectancy at birth; population distribution; and the accessibility index, which is equal to the length of all weather roads in kilometres in a region divided over the area of that region in square kilometres. He divides the country into four groups in descending order from A to D, with A having the highest score in socioeconomic development. The first contains Khartoum and the Red Sea and Kassala Provinces. The second are the Central and Northern regions (old Blue Nile and Northern Provinces). The third is comprised of Kordofan and Darfur. Finally the lowest category contains Equatoria, Upper Nile and Bahr el Ghazal Provinces, which make up the southern region. Bibliogr.
