Abstract: | In recent years much has been published on 'urban agriculture', emphasizing the positive effect in terms of food security and poverty reduction of farming in the urban areas of developing countries. In this article the literature on the subject is critically examined, in particular that on the spread of food production in and around sub-Saharan African cities and towns. The authors present a disaggregated view of food production in urban areas, emphasizing the analytical and policy importance of rural-urban interactions in resource and output markets as well as in income transfers. The scope and limits of useful policy intervention in this field are considered. Food production in urban and peri-urban areas, the authors conclude, certainly has a role to play in the food security of part of the urban population of sub-Saharan Africa. However, its contribution to the general welfare of the poor should not be exaggerated, nor therefore should its claims for scarce development resources. Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum. |
