Abstract:Between 1 and 15 August 1997, Mozambique had its second country-wide population census. This briefing outlines how the census ran - an operation of considerable scale in an extremely poor and war-damaged country, and raises some broader questions relating the census to Mozambique's contemporary politics. The author discusses the history of the census, the first postindependence census of 1980, the 1997 census in Cabo Delgado, and the politics of the census, in particular as part of a broader process of national consolidation. There was general consensus that the population census had been a success, although not all areas had been covered. In sum, it would appear that the census was not a 'Frelimo census'; however, there were allegations on a local level of party political intrigue. Bibliogr., notes.
