Abstract: | In sub-Saharan Africa at present only Botswana, Kenya and Zimbabwe are reported to experience incipient fertility decline - an indication of the subcontinent's entry into the second phase of the fertility transition after undergoing significant changes in the socioeconomic and demographic determinants of fertility over the past few decades. This paper examines aspects of the current fertility trend in Botswana. It also discusses the need for reliable data collection with the help of appropriate tools for monitoring and evaluating demographic trends in the subcontinent. As for Botswana, profound changes in traditional nuptiality patterns and social and/or economic developments since the 1970s have been the principal causes of fertility decline. The expansion of mother and child health care and family planning services was timely and these programmes provided the highly motivated female population with access to modern contraceptive methods. The findings for Botswana are contrasted to the experiences in South and East Asia, where a different mix of factors triggered off fertility decline. These experiences are worth noting by policymakers and government programmers in the African subcontinent. Bibliogr., notes. |
