Abstract: | The newest experiment in African education formally opened its 'doors' in the fall of 1997. The World Bank-sponsored pilot project, the African virtual university, began teaching Internet classes at twelve public and private universities in Africa. The construction and implementation of this African on-ramp to the world's information superhighway leads to a consideration of how Liberia can become a beneficiary of these latest events. This study highlights the possibilities provided by accessible, existing, funded projects and aims at initiating dialogue among those interested in advancing education in Liberia. Part 1 defines the concept of the virtual university and discusses the technology necessary for implementation of technological alternatives at various levels of participation from the least to the most expensive while also exploring the questions of a technology-based programme's adaptability to Liberia's current situation. Part 2 examines the sources of funding for establishing an infrastructure and for participation in the current initiative offered by the World Bank. Bibliogr., notes, ref. |
