Abstract:At a time when South Africa is creating its first juvenile justice system, it is critical that the voices of the participants most directly affected are heard. The Voices of the Youth project was designed to generate data regarding the youth perspective in juvenile justice. This article details that project in terms of its method of assessment, the youth populations targeted, and overall sample characteristics such as age, gender, race, and language. In addition, it summarizes youth responses to a number of questionnaire items, viz. what does juvenile justice mean to you? Do you think sentencing options for youth should include whipping, prison, reform school, schools of industry, working for the community, rehabilitative or treatment programmes, individual counselling and family counselling? Who should have a say in what happens to youth who commit crimes? What role can youth play in assisting young people who have been in trouble with the law? The article discusses the youth responses and highlights how they will affect the creation of a comprehensive and viable juvenile justice system in South Africa. Notes, ref., sum. (p.I)
