Abstract:This article traces the ideas and patterns of thought that have characterized and influenced home economics programmes in Zimbabwe over time. It first discusses the history of the education system in Zimbabwe in general and establishes the context and manner in which home economics in Zimbabwe has developed. It then presents the history of home economics in the international world. Finally, it considers the evolution and practice of home economics in Zimbabwe as compared to the world view of the home economics profession. The world view of home economics is that of a field of study focusing on the well-being of individuals and families and addressing pratical problems of family life. This view differs from current practice in Zimbabwe, where home economics programmes tend more towards occupational skills training. The article concludes with recommendations for further research and practice. Bibliogr., sum.
