Abstract: | The Gender Equity Unit (GEU)is a gender desk at the University of the Western Cape (UWC), South Africa. The objectives of the GEU, established in 1993, were to develop a statistical profile of the gender composition of the UWC workforce and to analyse the position of women on campus in all aspects of university life, including decisionmaking structures, appointments, promotions, research and teaching. It was also mandated to make a study of the access of women students to university programmes and their achievements and develop a curriculum on women and gender at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Since 1997, the GEU has diversified its focus to include the gender of men, arguing that a total preoccupation with the gender of women constrains the emancipatory, feminist project. The primary task now is to promote the understanding in both men and women that hegemonic forms of masculinity can be resisted, alternatives can be accomplished and gender relations must be transformed to the mutual benefit of both genders at UWC.
