Abstract: | In 1995 the Faculty of Arts of the University of Pretoria, South Africa, instituted a support programme, named 'Project Initiative 2100', to ensure that educationally disadvantaged students succeed in their BA studies. Point of departure was the idea that admission based solely on the M-scores (high school marks) of students is outdated in the sense that it prevents many educationally disadvantaged students who could have been academically successful at tertiary level from being admitted to university. An examination of the findings of the support programme over the first two years shows that a shift away from the traditional M-score admission policy to a developmental approach whereby the student's language proficiency, cognitive reasoning, and motivational aspects are considered, appears to be justified.
