Abstract: | In May 1997, the 'Planning workshop on water demand management research networking in Africa and the Middle East' was held in Cairo. This collective volume contains mainly executive summaries. The introduction, Water demand management: conceptual framework and policy implementation, by David Brooks, is presented full-text. The next four chapters, by Ali Ghezawi (the Middle East and North Africa), Asenath Omwega (Eastern Africa), Oumar Tall (Western Africa) and Simon Forster (Southern Africa), are summaries of papers identifying research institutions and document research activities on water demand management in their respective regions. Ch. 5 (by Geoffrey Stiles) is the summary of an overview paper integrating the results from the first four studies and recommending next steps. Ch. 6 (by Eva Rathgeber) is an introduction to gender-based analysis. Ch. 7 and 8 (by Sarah Loza and Mutsembi Manundu) present social and gender considerations in water management. The conclusion is a consensus document presenting results from the workshop's small-group sessions. |
