Abstract:Tertiary students who underachieve in mathematics and science as a result of inadequate schooling in these subjects need to be supported in the skills required to master these subjects. First year students on the BSc Extended Programme (Renaissance) in the Faculty of Science at the University of Pretoria were introduced to mind mapping as a study strategy. The effect of using this technique was considered in a small-scale action research project that was conducted in the first semester of 1998. From a total of 35 students enrolled for the Science Orientation course, 23 completed and returned a questionnaire. Nine students indicated that they had used the technnique in preparation for tests in all of their subjects, while 13 students indicated that they had used the technique in some of their subjects. Most of the students showed an improvement in marks when mind mapping was used. Bibliogr., notes, sum. in English and Afrikaans.
