Abstract:For lack of records, it is rather difficult to recapture the glorious past of the Bamenda Grasslands when elephant tusks played a leading role in the economy and wild rubber was of some commercial importance. This economy received a heavy blow from modern trade competition and the Grasslands paled considerably into insignificance. But during the early part of the 19th century, commercial travellers (even before the Haousa trader) were attracted by the wealth, fascinating industries and crafts that flourished over the area. The big and petty chiefdoms with their various tribes were chiefly pre-occupied with commerce but land disputes led to much tribal feuds. War was looked on as an industry. This view does not prevail till this day; the other two chief pre-occupations were education and trade. These subjects are dealt with in the present article under the headings: Education; Internal Trade; External Trade.
