Abstract: | Background, development and possible consequences of the reversal of the position on 'french' or 'White man's' education which became manifest with the favourable reception of a group new to the brotherhood, the Dahira (=circle) des Etudiants et Elèves Mourides du Sénégal (DEEMS). The founder's poetry, transliterated in the Internatonal Phonetic Alphabet, is also translated from the Arabic into French by a Mouride scholar. Not only is government organized education now tolerated in the heart of the Mouride zone, the brotherhood's leadership also actively encourages Arabic-language instruction - a secondary school at Ndame since 1975, and even an Arabic-language university currently under construction in Touba. |
