| Abstract: | The Fulani Jihad (c. 1804-1808) of 'Uthman ibn Fudi (or Usman dan Fodio) (1754-1817) triggered further changes in the Islam of the region, with two major jihads again under Ahmadu Ahmadu of Masina (1775-1845) and al-Hajj 'Umar (1794-1864); many later imitators of the leaders of these movements, not all of whom are well-known, led their own jihads. When closely regarded, many of these later figures can be seen to have drawn most of their ideas from their original, Usman dan Fodio. For these reasons, the author takes a second look at this man and his associates, to evaluate more closely some of their aims and ideas. |
