Abstract: | In May, 1971, the National Assembly of Egypt was charged with the task of preparing a draft constitution, to be submitted to the people for approval in a general referendum later in the summer. A Preparatory Committee bad to sound out public opinion concerning the basic principles to be embodied in the constitution. A large proportion of the numerous suggestions cited in 'al-Ahram', touch on the position which Islam should occupy in the new constitution. A selection of some of the more typical of these suggestions is inserted in this paper in the following sections: 1. Islam in the new constitution: views of the people - 2. A controversial essay (meant is the essay 'The Islamic Shari'a and the permanent constitution' by Dr. Jamal al-'Utaifi, a member of the Preparatory Committee) - 3. Replies from the experts - 4. The Shari'a in the final draft of the constitution. |
