Abstract: | The international law dealing with transit trade is subjected to an evaluation by exploring the extent to which both the interests of Zimbabwe in its transit trade, as well as its interests as a transit State, are satisfactorily treated of in international law. Attention is focussed on the legal rather than the political problems of transit trade, and the inquiry is confined to the transit of merchandise by rail or road, which are the only important methods of the transportation of Zimbabwe's transit trade. In most respects transit by air is in any case governed by distinct rules which have been elaborated in international conventions. Sections: Introduction Legal issues - Transit rights by virtue of particular conventions - Transit rights by virtue of general conventions - Transit rights by virtue of customary international law - Transit rights by virtue of general principles of law - Conclusion.
