Abstract:The thesis of this dissertation is that subsistence farming and herding populations in the drought stricken areas of Senegal adapted to and survived the highly stressful situation of drought within the context of a national rural development strategy which often did not mesh well with the efforts of farmers and herders to adapt. These farmers and herders adapted to the drought by devising innovative strategies for survival. Because of the drought, farmers and herders in the drought affected areas of Senegal were forced to make changes in the way they make a living. The drought caused changes, not only in the environment, but in many economic and social institutions of these farmers and herders. Strategies for adaption to drought are the focus of the hypothesis.
