Abstract:Codification of Roman-Dutch law in Zimbabwe is not only desirable but is a necessary step towards the development of an indigenous legal system suited to local Zimbabwean conditions. In the country's present state of flux, codification must be viewed as part of the ongoing exercise of sifting the laws and adapting, altering or repealing them in accordance with the social processes at work within the society. Thus the codification of Zimbabwean criminal law, a project which began in AugUst 1983, will produce an interim penal code, and this is reflected in the codification committee's statement of policy and objectives. Among the prominent features of this codification exercise are the inclusion of social policy statements in the body of the code text, the consolidation of individual offences into single general offences, the minimization or elimination of conflicts between general law and customary law, and the use of plain and simple language in stead of technical legal terms.
