Abstract:This essay explores ground common to ecology and politics and addresses the question to what extent and in what ways are ecological ideas political ideas. The discussion, divided into five main sections, endeavors to steer a course between the pitfalls of environmental determinism on the one hand and economic reductionism on the other. Sections: 1. Models of changing Population-land relationships in Africa - 2. The ecology of health and disease - 3. The ecology of African land use - 4. Evironmental hazards and ecological crisis in Africa - 5. The politics of ecological knowledge. Notes, ref. tab.
