Abstract:The author gives a sketch of the history of legislation concerning Education in Nigeria since 1954. After 1967 the Nigerian legislative bodies, which were then increased from four to thirteen, began to issue Education Edicts. Complete Education Edicts have only just begun to appear. The Public Education Edict 1970 of the East-Central State (Edict No. 2 of 1971); The Education Edict 1972 of the Mid-Western State (Edict No. 5 of 1973). Both edicts have Some common and new features, namely a unified teaching service, take-over of schools by the state, the establishment of School Boards and the abrogation of the educational functions of the local authorities. The differences in the arrangement of sections, the subject-matter covered and the substance of the provisions in each of these two Edicts is discussed. The author draws attention to the Federal Government policy statement (Daily Times of 21 August 1972) in which the responsibility of the Federal Government is expressed in such a way that the Federal Government can produce a harmonizing influence on the State Education Edicts.
