Abstract:The article describes the Permanent Commission of Enquiry in Tanzania, that has been established by the constitution of 1965 and that recently began its work. The task of this commission is to enquire into the behaviour of Government and Party Officials, either by order of the President or after complaints by the public, and to report its findings to the President, who once a year will report on the Commission's work to Parliament. After briefly considering the constitutional and political development and the already existing possibilities to control the administration of Tanzania, the author treats of the task and working-methods of the commission. Although the commission has the task of an ombudsman it is not in the first resort a parliamentary institution. Some other points of difference with the ombudsman are worked out in the end. (The original article is published in Dutch in the 'Internationale Spectator', 21(1967), 10, p. 807-825).
