Abstract:Within the context of the present world economic crisis, the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund have suggested the privatization of public enterprises as one of the ways developing countries can combat high balance-of-payments and budget deficits. Some fundamental problems concerning the privatization issue in Kenya are discussed in the form of preliminary answers to the following questions: What were the objectives for the establishment of public enterprises in Kenya? What is the reason for their now planned transformation into private enterprises? What does the efficiency of public enterprises mean? Are there any alternative methods to improving the overall efficiency of public enterprises? Which public enterprises should be privatized? What are the consequences of privatization? Notes.
