Abstract: | The objective of the present paper is to focus upon the current development of African capitalism. This necessitates a brief survey of the evolution of state policy towards African private enterprise, and consequently includes reference to the attempt to create a subordinate African capitalist class in the bantustans. Because the outlines of this latter aspect are now relatively well established in the literature, the particular purpose of this analysis is to emphasize the recent efforts to promote African capitalism within the urban areas of 'white' South Africa, and to assess its significance for the future.
