Abstract:The author revisited the Dry Zone (the Arid Zone with under 100 mm, average annual precipitation, plus the semi-arid zone with between 100 mm. and 500 mm. average annual precipitation) of West Africa in 1959. This paper deals with the possibilities of economic advance of the Dry Zone, which seems to depend upon mining and relating water development. Successively the author describes the economic aspects of mining iron ore in the Kédia of d'Idjil range (N.W. Mauritania), of the activities of the mission of 'Aménagement du Senegal' and of the Office du Niger. A discussion follows the paper. References, figures.
