Abstract:The repercussions from the expressions of Italian violence against the Ethiopian Orthodox Church were so adverse that the Italians soon sought other ways to subject the Church to their rule. They began to permit and later actively supported the regular observance of religious holidays. But in many holiday celebrations and church dedications the Italian government's presence was as obvious as the religious rites. The Italians were portrayed as showing concern for Ethiopia by giving freedom of religion, respecting traditional religious customs, preserving the historic value of the monasteries, supporting the Church financially, helping the spread of the täwahedo faith. It appears that the desire of the government to subject the Church was more fully realized through conciliatory measures than through the earlier attempts at forced subjection. But much of the subjection was merely superficial. Notes.
