Abstract: | The American Henry S. Sanford was deeply involved in the empire-building machinations of Leopold II, King of the Belgians, from 1877 to the late 1880's. In this period he performed valuable services which helped to bring into existence the Congo Independent State. Sanford is in the diplomatic history of the partition of Africa one of the least understood participants. His papers, along with other materials, make a clarification and reassessment of his role, of which many aspects have received inadequate attention, possible. Notes. |
