Abstract:Contention is that the survival of political influence of any traditional leader in local community decisions is not entirely a result of the inability of new political leaders to provide and employ modern institutions, neither does it depend on the syncretising ability of the traditional leader. The survival and scope of influence of a traditional leader in community decisions depend to a great extent on the strength of his political relationship with the power structure at the national or regional level. In support of this view, focus is on a particular community and a specific issue which has dominated local politics since the introduction of a modern system of local government in Western Nigeria.
