| Abstract: | The purpose of this article is to outline briefly the main approaches, methods and sources used in former calculations and make new series more readily available in published form. First attention is given to the definition of the production boundary and to the basis of valuation and classification adopted. The results are presented together with a brief description of the methods and the sources utilized. Attention is given to the reliability of the results. A comparison is made between the present series and the figures prepared by Frankel and the Bureau of Census and Satistics. A detailed classification of economic activities in South Africa for the purpose of product calculations is given in Appendix A while the relevant sources are listed is Appendix B.
