Abstract: | This paper analyses the relationship between the growth of the East London-King William's Town (EL-KWT) region, and the consumer potential of the Black township of Mdantsane. An increase in the supply of a region typically gives rise to an increase in employment, income and demand, which may take place both within the region as well outside it. This paper examines wether it would be feasible to raise the internal external demand ratio of the EL-KWT region by mean of a greater utilization of the local Black market of Mdantsane. In section 1 the past growth performance of EL-KWT is assessed in order to identify the causes and consequences of the relative lack of growth of the region. Section 2 gives some information on the income and expenditure pattern of Blacks in Mdantsane. Section 3 looks at the interrelationship between local demand and supply, while section 4 briefly considers some of the important policy implications of the analysis. Notes, tables. |
