Abstract:The border dispute between the Orange Free State and Lesotho has been a source of trouble for many decades. This controversy between the two neighbouring states came to the fore especially in the period immediately preceding the independence of Basutoland which became the Kingdom of Lesotho on October 4, 1966. As part of their election campaign the leaders of the major political parties in Basutoland grasped at the slumbering land issue with the Free State - and, ever since, the world has had to take cognisance of the repeated demands from Lesotho for territory ostensibly belonging to the Basuto. These territorial claims are aimed at incorporating the so-called Conqueror Territory, a region on the western border of Lesotho, into that country. Notes, map.
