Abstract: | Review article concerning the book 'An Introduction to African Criminology', published by William Clifford, 1974. The author is highly critical of this book. After some general remarks about Clifford's work, she comments on the concept of an 'African criminology', which she sees not as a pale imitation of Western criminology but as the product of a somewhat incestuous marriage of British anthropology and British law. In the conclusion she briefly indicates some of the strengths and weaknesses of Clifford's work. Sections of the article: The necessity of sociology of law and a new criminology - The lure of prediction - Japan: a possible model? - Conclusion. Notes. |
