Abstract:An investigation was carried out to compare the attitudes developed by European and Bantu workers in the context of a South African factory. Subjects from both racial groups were asked to rate certain items and then to comment an their ratings. Differences in the ratings given by various groups were tested for significance. The main findings indicate that European workers were concerned with prestige issues. The attitudes of Bantu workers were conflicting, showing on the one hand concern with security needs, and the other hand a strong desire to acquire greater status and better opportunities for advancement. Bantu workers were more self-centred than European workers and showed less group consciousness. Tables, references.
