Abstract: | This paper is divided into three parts. The first is a brief description of the physical and social conditions in the Benoni location, especially in the context of the depression of the early 1930's. The second section points to those aspects of working class life which became a focus of concern for the Benoni Town Council, and explains the reasons for the crystallization of a strategy of control. The third section examines the measures of control implemented by the local authority and the resistance which they evoked from the working class in Benoni. Notes. |
