Abstract: | Purpose of this tentative essay is to draw attention to the significance of the neglected field of secret men's societies and cults in Nigeria and to stimulate further research. After defining six principal characteristics of secret men's societies in the beginning of the colonial era, the attitudes of the colonial administration towards these societies is described. The problems raised for the administration by secret societies and cults, and the official response to these problems, emerge clearly from the review of the records relating to the Oil Rivers (later Niger Coast) Protectorate (1885-1899), and to the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria (1900-1913), which forms the main part of this contribution.
