Abstract: | Examines the relationships between European supervisors and African workers in a particular work situation - that of a Bus Company. The relationships between Europeans and Africans in the Bus Company have three major characteristics: ambivalence, ambiguity, and the involvement of participants in a dilemma. The multi-racial situation in an industrialized country produces sponsor-relationships in such a way that the European and African participants are entangled in a web of rights and obligations, which both categories of people are required to fulfil. The sponsor-relationship between European supervisors and African workers cross-cut racial boundaries creating a partial paradox within a formalized political system. Ref., notes. |
