Abstract:This paper offers notes on self-employed and salaried women living in the Adabraka section of Accra. The first section provides abrief description of the area. Then the occupational categories among the neighbourhood women in relation to age, household composition, and the increasing importance of formal education are considered. The third section discusses how young gils are trained in selling. The next section describes the four strata of market women, identified among the Adabraka population. Finally the A.'s discuss some cases of women who have moved between self-employment and salaried jobs. Figs., notes., ref., tables.
