Abstract: | The author discusses some of the correlates of the dominant partplayed by women in African hoe cultivation. Female farming is strongly linked to two types of inheritance, firstly, to matrilineal systems and secondly, with the form of vertical inheritance that Gluckman has called the house property complex.
