Abstract: | This article, dealing with the main empirical aspects of fieldwork in Mtemdele township, Lusaka, and focusing on the position of married. African women, provides informative empirical data on a section of Zambian urban society. Special attention is paid to the issue of married women and work. The contention that these women might working because their husbands' incomes were insufficient, proved false. An explanation as sought in an exploration of the reasons for the exclusion of women from wage-earning employment, and why only a few of them tried to get remunerative activities. The author suggests that the social set-up of the urban economic structure debars women of the township from participating. An analysis of the work-activities within the township in terms of entrepreneurship explains the small number of working women; the activities which they pursue have developed into institutionalised social forms, which tend to restrict the number of women who carry them out.
