Abstract: | The fact that the Somalis would not accept the idea of secular education given by the Government until 1943 was entirely due to the belief that the Government's offer was a cloak to disguise an attempt to convert the Somali to Christianity. This mistrust still smoulders amongst the nomads who form the greater part of the population. The 'Waddads', or local religious leaders, are fearful of losing their position of authority. The writer describes the limited programme of a Nomadic Betterment pilot scheme, which started with a small number of the 'Waddads' themselves. |
