Abstract: | The full extent and urgency of the problems facing, young Mauritanians in urban and, above all, infra-urban areas can be understood only in the context of the enormous economic social and cultural upheavals which have followed upon the rapid and massive sedentarisation of a people who, up to then, had always been nomads. Sections: drought and urbanization - the myth of the city - the distortions of urban development - infra-urban overspill - an obsession with land tenure - housing - water - rehabilitation of the environment - transport - employment - the situation of women and young girls in infra-urban areas - malnutrition in infra-urban areas - conclusion.
