Abstract:In Kenya there are 685,436 elderly men and 667,431 elderly women over 50 years of age. This brings a grand total of 1,352,867 elderly people in the Republic. By the year 2025 A.D. the majority of Kenyans who are now between 15-16 years of age will be in the aging group. Even today less than 10% of the Kenyan population are covered by any form of Social Security. Those covered are civil servants under a pension scheme and others who are in the private sector. The private sector employees are covered by a provident fund programme. More research should be undertaken in order to establish approaches which are consistent with the national goals and personal aspirations of health for all by the year 2000. Such an approach would ensure that all basic needs components are integrated into the process which include the provision of education, nutrition, health, clean water and sanitation, good housing and roads. The author describes the present situation, advocates comprehensive policies on aging which assure social security and responsibility to all citizens, and reviews some forms of health insurance. - Ref.
