Abstract:Knowing the extent to which the financial costs of satisfying the energy needs of local rural health units (FSRB) strain their modest budgets, it is only natural that an interest sbould be taken in the increasingly efficient alternatives offered by the use of renewable energies. It was with this consideration in mind that the Institute of Meteorological Physics (IPM) and the Public Health Clinic (CSPFMD) of the University of Dakar drew up a three-stage researchprogramme: 1) listing and classification of an FSRB's energy needs; 2) testing and evaluating equipment operating on the renewable energy resources; 3) design of an economical prototype clinic having the greatest possible energy autonomy, and research into a methodology for training future users. An in-the-field survey carried out among ten public and private Senegalese rural clinics, and discussions held with officials in charge of community health activities, enabled completion of the initial stage of the planned programme: Expressed needs - Presently satisfied needs - Quantitative evaluation - A range of solutions using renewable energy - Taking other factors into account - Conclusions.
