Abstract: | This article analyses the surface structure and the deep structure of Otjiherero (Herero) place names in Namibia. The author's toponymical hypothesis assumes initially that the former is based on an ostensible definition, the latter on a metonymical definition. The concept of the surface structure demonstrates associative relations, containing a logical spectrum expressed by onomasiological and onomatological lexicographic means. The concept of the deep structure considers generic relations and operates with descriptive, identifying renderings. Praise songs identifying the concept of Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, provide a good example of the deep structure of Herero place names. Bibliogr., notes, ref. |
