Abstract:A discussion of the historically varying significance of political, economic and ideological elements in the structuring of class relations in Sokoto. The relationship between and among these elements, their particular conjuncture with certain historical events, redefine and condition the character of class relations and the social system at given points in time, providing a series of new patterns of 'epochal' systems seen in broad historical perspective to be a) the pre-jihad, b) the Caliphate, c) the colonial, and d) the national.
